Lea Michele to Star in First-Ever Broadway Revival of "Chess"
Get ready, Broadway fans! Lea Michele is making a triumphant return to the stage, headlining the first-ever revival of the iconic musical "Chess." The production, set to begin in Fall 2025 at a Shubert Theater (location to be announced), marks Michele's first Broadway appearance since her acclaimed run in the 2002 revival of "Funny Girl."
The musical, a cult favorite with music by ABBA's Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and lyrics by Tim Rice, will feature Michele as Florence Vassy. Joining her on stage will be Tony winner Aaron Tveit ("Moulin Rouge! The Musical") as Freddie Trumper and Nicholas Christopher ("Hamilton") as Anatoly Sergievsky. The production will be directed by Michael Mayer, who previously worked with Michele on "Spring Awakening." Lorin Latarro ("Waitress") will handle the choreography.
"Chess" is a Cold War-era story centered around a high-stakes chess tournament between an American grandmaster and his Soviet rival. The plot thickens when the Hungarian-born arbiter, Florence Vassy, becomes entangled in a love triangle, adding romantic and political intrigue to the already tense atmosphere.
The musical's journey began as a concept album in 1984, featuring hits like "One Night in Bangkok." The album's success led to a West End production in London in 1986, which was a hit. However, the Broadway production in 1988 faced challenges and closed after a short run. Despite this, "Chess" has maintained a dedicated following and has been revived globally. This revival will feature a new book by Emmy Award winner Danny Strong ("Dopesick").
Fans can expect a fresh take on this beloved musical, with further details on the creative team, casting, and specific run dates to be announced soon.
