Kilauea Volcano Erupts Again, Episode 31 Begins

Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii has entered its 31st eruptive episode since December 2024, with lava fountains erupting from the Halemaumau crater. The eruption commenced this afternoon, with initial fountains reaching approximately 100 feet in height. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) has issued warnings regarding potential hazards associated with the ongoing activity.

The eruption is contained within the Halemaumau crater, located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Commercial airports in Hawaii County are not currently impacted. However, the National Weather Service indicates that prevailing northeast winds, blowing at 15 to 20 mph, could carry volcanic gas and fine particles towards areas south and southwest of the summit.

The HVO anticipates high levels of sulfur dioxide emissions, potentially leading to the formation of vog (volcanic smog) downwind of Kilauea. Residents in affected areas, particularly those with respiratory conditions, are advised to limit their exposure. The eruption is also producing Pele's hair, thin strands of volcanic glass that can travel significant distances and cause skin and eye irritation. Drivers on Highway 11 near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are urged to exercise caution due to the potential for pumice and other fragments falling on the roadway.

While lava flows are currently confined to the crater, the HVO emphasizes that hazards persist around the Kilauea caldera, including unstable crater walls, ground cracking, and rockfalls. The volcano alert level remains at watch, and the aviation color code is orange. Previous eruptive episodes have varied in duration, with most lasting less than a day and separated by periods of pause.

BNN's Perspective: The ongoing activity at Kilauea serves as a reminder of the dynamic nature of our planet. While the current eruption appears contained, the potential for hazards underscores the importance of preparedness and adherence to official warnings. It is crucial for residents and visitors to remain informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
