Russian Strikes on Ukraine Kill Civilians, Prompt International Condemnation
Kyiv, Ukraine – A large-scale Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine overnight into Sunday resulted in the deaths of at least four people and wounded at least 40 others across the country. The capital city of Kyiv bore the brunt of the assault, which targeted civilian areas. Among the casualties in Kyiv was a 12-year-old girl.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the attacks involved nearly 500 strike drones and over 40 missiles. Besides Kyiv, the bombardment targeted the regions of Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, and Odesa. In Zaporizhzhia, three children were among the 27 wounded, and over two dozen buildings were damaged.
The attacks, which began overnight and continued after dawn, also struck residential buildings, civilian infrastructure, a medical facility, and a kindergarten. Damage was reported at more than 20 locations across Kyiv.
The assault prompted military responses in neighboring Poland, where fighter jets were deployed as Russia struck targets in western Ukraine. Polish military officials described these measures as "preventative."
The attacks occurred shortly after President Zelenskyy announced a "mega deal" for weapons purchases from the United States, including a $90 billion package and a separate agreement for Ukrainian-made drones.
Russian officials have not yet commented on the attacks. However, Russia's Defense Ministry stated that its air defenses shot down 41 Ukrainian drones overnight into Sunday.
BNN's Perspective:
The ongoing conflict continues to inflict a devastating toll on Ukrainian civilians. While the recent weapons deal with the United States offers a glimmer of hope for Ukraine's defense capabilities, the persistent attacks underscore the urgent need for a diplomatic solution to end the violence and protect innocent lives. The international community must continue to exert pressure on all parties to de-escalate the situation and seek a peaceful resolution.
