Landslide Devastates Sudanese Village, Killing Approximately 1,000

Cairo – A devastating landslide has struck a village in Sudan's Darfur region, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 1,000 people. The Sudan Liberation Movement-Army, a rebel group controlling the area, reported the tragedy occurred on Sunday in Tarasin village in the Marrah Mountains following several days of heavy rainfall in late August.

According to the group, the village was completely destroyed, with only one survivor. The group has appealed to the United Nations and international aid organizations for assistance in recovering the bodies. Footage from a local news outlet showed a flattened area between mountain ranges, with people searching the site.

The landslide is considered one of the deadliest natural disasters in Sudan's recent history. The Darfur region, including the Marrah Mountains, has become largely inaccessible to the UN and aid groups due to restrictions and ongoing fighting between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The Sudan Liberation Movement-Army, which operates in the area, has not taken sides in the conflict.

Darfur's army-aligned governor, Minni Minnawi, described the event as a "humanitarian tragedy" and called for urgent international aid. The Marrah Mountains, a volcanic chain, have become a refuge for displaced families fleeing the ongoing civil war.

The civil war, which began in April 2023, has resulted in over 40,000 deaths and displaced over 14 million people. The conflict has been marked by atrocities, including ethnically motivated killings and rape, and is under investigation by the International Criminal Court.

BNN's Perspective: The scale of this tragedy underscores the devastating impact of both natural disasters and the ongoing civil conflict in Sudan. The international community must prioritize providing humanitarian aid and support to the affected population, while also working towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict to prevent further loss of life and suffering.
