L3Harris to Bolster Air Force Command Aircraft Communications
L3Harris Technologies has secured a contract to provide crucial communications support for the U.S. Air Force's E-4C fleet, a key component of the Survivable Airborne Operations Center (SAOC) program. The company will act as a subcontractor on the SAOC initiative, led by SNC, with the engineering and manufacturing development phase spanning five years. The contract was awarded through Collins Aerospace, an RTX business.
The SAOC program aims to replace the existing E-4B Nightwatch aircraft with the E-4C, ensuring the Air Force maintains an airborne command post capable of operating during national emergencies and high-end conflicts. The E-4C is designed to provide secure and resilient communications for senior civilian and military leadership, particularly in challenging environments.
L3Harris will be responsible for integrating communication suites for the E-4C fleet, leveraging its advanced resilient communications technologies. The company will draw upon over 15 years of experience supporting the E-4B, the E-4C's predecessor, and its ongoing development of wideband communications technology. This experience positions L3Harris to deliver upgraded systems capable of operating even when traditional communication methods are disrupted.
The E-4C is intended to serve as a central hub for national command authority communications, connecting airborne, ground, and space-based systems. The SAOC aircraft's ability to function during crises that could compromise fixed command centers is paramount. L3Harris's involvement in the SAOC program aligns with its broader work in airborne and electronic warfare programs across the Department of War. The company also plays a role in the Advanced Battle Management System and the Next-Generation Jammer Low Band program, as well as providing electronic warfare and communications technology for various Air Force platforms, including the F-16 Falcon, the EA-37B Compass Call, and the B-2 Spirit. These programs focus on maintaining connectivity, survivability, and situational awareness in contested environments.
BNN's Perspective:
This contract highlights the ongoing need for robust and secure communication capabilities within the U.S. military. While the investment in advanced technology is essential for national security, it's crucial to ensure these systems are cost-effective and subject to rigorous oversight to maintain public trust.
