Kim Jong Un Slams US Weapons, Pledges Support for Russia in Ukraine
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has publicly condemned American weapons as "tacky, defective" while reaffirming his country's support for Russia's war in Ukraine. This strong statement, delivered on Friday in Pyongyang, marks a significant escalation in North Korea's alignment with Moscow.
Kim's remarks came on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, celebrated in Moscow's Red Square, where North Korean generals were present. He praised North Korean troops fighting alongside Russian forces, particularly in the Kursk region, where Ukraine launched an incursion in August 2024. Russia plans to honor these North Korean soldiers with monuments and street names in Kursk.
This overt show of support follows Pyongyang's recent admission of its involvement in the conflict, something Kyiv and the U.S. had previously reported. Kim's speech, published by the state news agency KCNA, described North Korea's involvement as "justifiable" and vowed to deploy more troops if the West attempted another attack on Russia. North Korea has already supplied Russia with artillery shells, ballistic missiles, and other supplies.
The situation is further complicated by ongoing discussions about a potential ceasefire. Leaders from France, Germany, and the U.K. are meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv to discuss a truce. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that a 30-day truce, agreed upon by Kyiv and the U.S., would only be possible if Western countries halt weapons supplies to Ukraine.
BNN's Perspective: Kim Jong Un's increasingly vocal support for Russia is concerning. While the criticism of Western weaponry is expected, the open commitment of North Korean troops to the conflict, coupled with the potential for further escalation, adds a dangerous layer to an already volatile situation. The international community must carefully monitor the situation and work towards a peaceful resolution.
