FBI Director Claims Credit for Foiling Alleged New Year's Eve Terror Plot

FBI Director Kash Patel is taking credit for preventing a potential terrorist attack planned for New Year's Eve. The suspect, 18-year-old Christian Sturdivant, has been arrested and charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

According to the Justice Department, Sturdivant allegedly planned to attack revelers with hammers and knives. The investigation into Sturdivant began in 2022 when he was 14 years old. At that time, he was allegedly in contact with an unidentified ISIS member who instructed him to attack people with a hammer. Sturdivant attempted to follow these instructions but was stopped by his grandfather. Charges were not filed at the time due to his age, and he underwent psychological treatment.

The FBI's investigation continued in 2025. Sturdivant allegedly contacted a social media account he believed was linked to ISIS, but it was actually a fake account run by the New York Police Department. He allegedly expressed his intent to commit jihad and claimed to be a soldier of the state. Law enforcement officials found a handwritten note at Sturdivant's home titled "New Years Attack 2026," which detailed plans to stab people and attack responding police officers. The intended targets included Christians, Jews, members of the LGBTQ+ community, members of the military, and law enforcement.

U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson for the Western District of North Carolina stated that the planned attack was "very well-planned" and that "innocent people were going to die."

BNN's Perspective: While the arrest and charges are serious, it's important to acknowledge the complexities of this case. The suspect's age and past history, coupled with the involvement of undercover operations, warrant careful consideration. The FBI's role in preventing potential violence is crucial, but transparency and due process are equally vital in ensuring justice is served.
