From K-Pop Star to Animated Idol: Kevin Woo's Journey
Kevin Woo, a former member of the K-pop group U-Kiss, is experiencing a resurgence in the entertainment industry, this time through the animated film "K-Pop: Demon Hunters." The film, which debuted in June and quickly topped the Netflix global movie charts, features Woo as the voice of Mystery Saja, a member of the demon boy band Saja Boys. The film's soundtrack, including songs performed by Woo, has also achieved significant success, even surpassing the popularity of some actual K-pop groups on music charts.
Woo's journey began at age 15 when he moved from the United States to South Korea to pursue his dream of becoming a singer. He joined the band XING before debuting with U-Kiss in 2008, where he remained until 2017. After leaving the group, Woo returned to the U.S. and has since been involved in various K-pop-related projects. He made his Broadway debut in the musical "KPOP" and acted in Anderson .Paak's upcoming film "K-POPS."
Woo's involvement in "K-Pop: Demon Hunters" came about when he was approached by the film's executive music producer, Ian Eisendrath, to provide musical input and sing for the fictional Saja Boys. Woo was immediately drawn to the project, which allowed him to tap into his experience as a K-pop idol. The songs he performed, "Soda Pop" and "Your Idol," resonated with his understanding of the genre. The success of the film and its soundtrack has been remarkable, with the Saja Boys becoming the first male K-pop group to reach number one on the U.S. Spotify charts. Woo's Spotify monthly listeners grew from 10,000 to one million overnight.
Woo is currently developing a short film, "Seoul Switch," into a full-length feature and has released new music. He is also set to star in the horror film "Death Name."
