Comcept, Studio Behind Mighty No. 9, Officially Dissolved
Tokyo, Japan - The video game studio Comcept, founded in December 2010 by Keiji Inafune, has been officially dissolved. The decision was made earlier this month, on January 13, 2026, and was announced in Japan's government gazette.
Initial reports suggested a potential acquisition by LEVEL-5, but these were later clarified as a misunderstanding. LEVEL-5 established a separate subsidiary, LEVEL5 comcept, but this was a distinct entity. Comcept, under Inafune's leadership, continued to operate independently.
Comcept gained notoriety for its development of *Mighty No. 9*, a project that originated on Kickstarter. Prior to founding Comcept, Inafune was a prominent figure at Capcom, where he worked on franchises such as *Mega Man* and *Onimusha*. Besides *Mighty No. 9*, Comcept contributed to other titles, including *Soul Sacrifice* and *ReCore*.
LEVEL5 comcept was dissolved and absorbed by LEVEL-5's Osaka Office after Inafune's departure from LEVEL-5 in mid-2024. The Osaka office is known for its work on *Fantasy Life i* and *Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road*.
BNN's Perspective: The dissolution of Comcept marks the end of an era for a studio that, despite its challenges, played a role in the gaming industry. While *Mighty No. 9* faced criticism, the studio's legacy includes contributions to other titles and the involvement of a respected figure like Keiji Inafune. The closure highlights the volatile nature of the video game industry and the difficulties independent studios can face.
