Karmanos Cancer Hospital Recognized as a Top Cancer Care Provider
DETROIT – Karmanos Cancer Hospital, a division of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, has been awarded the Women's Choice Award as one of America's Best Hospitals for Cancer Care in 2026. This marks the 13th consecutive year the hospital has received this recognition, placing it among the top 2% of over 4,600 U.S. hospitals offering cancer care.
The Women's Choice Award evaluates hospitals based on several criteria. These include accreditation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Classification, which requires being an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The award also considers the availability of cancer-related services, infection rates, and patient recommendation ratings from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. Furthermore, the award incorporates research on women's healthcare preferences.
Brian Gamble, president of Karmanos Cancer Hospital and Cancer Network, emphasized the hospital's commitment to providing state-of-the-art, compassionate care. He highlighted the dedication of oncologists and clinical teams in delivering exceptional patient care. The hospital, as the only stand-alone cancer hospital in the state, prioritizes patient safety, particularly in minimizing hospital-acquired infections.
Delia Passi, founder and CEO of the Women's Choice Award, emphasized the importance of empowering women to make informed decisions about their cancer care. She noted that accredited hospitals, like Karmanos, offer a full range of diagnostic and treatment services, integrated care across specialties, and onsite services to minimize the need for multiple visits.
Karmanos Cancer Hospital is one of 465 hospitals nationwide to receive this prestigious recognition for 2026.
BNN's Perspective:
This recognition highlights the importance of quality cancer care and the value of patient-centered approaches. While the criteria for the award are comprehensive, it's crucial for patients to consider all available information and consult with their healthcare providers to make informed decisions about their treatment. The focus on infection control and patient satisfaction is a positive trend in healthcare.
