Jets Quarterback Justin Fields Placed on Injured Reserve, Season Over
The New York Jets have placed quarterback Justin Fields on injured reserve, effectively ending his season. The move, announced Tuesday, signals the likely conclusion of Fields' tenure with the team after a disappointing first year.
Fields, who signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the Jets in March, was immediately named the starting quarterback. However, the team struggled under his leadership, going 2-7 in games he started. He was benched in favor of Tyrod Taylor after a game against the Patriots in November. Shortly after, Fields sustained a knee injury during practice and has been inactive for the last three games despite practicing in the two weeks prior.
Throughout the season, Fields completed 62.7% of his passes for 1,259 yards, throwing seven touchdowns and one interception. He was sacked 27 times. He also contributed on the ground, rushing for 383 yards and four touchdowns.
Jets coach Aaron Glenn expressed disappointment with the season's outcome, stating the team "tried to see how we could get this thing to work, but it wasn't getting as better as we would like it." Fields himself acknowledged the season's shortcomings, stating it "was definitely not what we planned it out to be."
The Jets are now starting rookie Brady Cook at quarterback. While Fields is under contract for next year, the team is expected to move on from him. Cutting Fields would result in a significant dead-money hit against the salary cap, though the team could save a small amount.
BNN's Perspective:
The situation with Justin Fields highlights the inherent risks involved in the NFL. While the Jets made a significant investment in Fields, the results simply didn't materialize. It's a tough situation for both the player and the team, but the business of football often demands difficult decisions. The Jets will now need to reassess their quarterback situation and plan for the future.
