Packers Quarterback Jordan Love to Undergo Thumb Surgery
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is scheduled to undergo surgery on his left thumb, according to Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst. The procedure is to address a ligament issue. Despite the injury, the team anticipates Love will return to practice next week and be ready for the season opener against the Detroit Lions on September 7th.
The injury occurred during the Packers' preseason loss to the New York Jets on Saturday. Love was sacked during the game and completed only one of five passes for seven yards.
This isn't Love's first experience with injuries. Last season, he suffered an MCL sprain during the season opener, which caused him to miss two games. He also sustained an injury in the regular season finale, impacting his performance in the Wild Card Round.
Love, drafted by the Packers in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, has been the team's starting quarterback for the past two seasons. He has led the team to an 18-14 record and playoff appearances in both seasons.
With Love likely sidelined for the remainder of the preseason, backup quarterbacks Malik Willis, Sean Clifford, and Taylor Elgersma are expected to receive more playing time. In the preseason opener, the trio combined for 77 passing yards. Willis, who started two regular season games last season due to Love's injury, led the team to victory in both games.
Love has just over three and a half weeks to recover before the Packers' season opener against the Detroit Lions.
BNN's Perspective: While the injury is concerning, the Packers have a capable backup in Malik Willis. The team's success hinges on Love's health, but the coaching staff has demonstrated the ability to adapt. The team's performance in the upcoming season will be a key indicator of their overall strength.
