Ravens to Carry Four Running Backs, Rookie Kicker Confirmed

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh has confirmed the team's plan to carry four running backs on their 53-man roster for the upcoming season. This decision appears to solidify Rasheen Ali's position on the team, joining Derrick Henry, Justice Hill, and Keaton Mitchell in the backfield.

Ali, a 2024 fifth-round draft pick, made the roster last year but was placed on injured reserve before the season opener. He returned to play in six games, accumulating 10 carries for 31 yards. With Henry and Hill taking the majority of the carries, Ali's role was limited.

Entering training camp, Ali's roster spot was uncertain, especially with Mitchell expected to return to full strength after an ACL injury. However, Ali's performance in the preseason opener against the Colts, including a 69-yard kickoff return and a touchdown, significantly improved his chances. Despite a less impressive showing in a recent game, Harbaugh's comments suggest Ali will make the team.

Other running backs, Ernest Johnson and Myles Gaskin, are unlikely to challenge Ali for a roster spot. Ali is not expected to see significant offensive touches outside of late-game situations. However, he may contribute on kickoff returns, a role expected to be more prominent in the upcoming season due to rule changes.

In addition to the running back situation, Harbaugh announced that rookie Tyler Loop will be the team's starting kicker. Loop, a sixth-round pick, secured the position after the team waived undrafted free agent John Hoyland. Loop's performance in the preseason, including six successful field goals and five extra points, solidified his place on the team.

BNN's Perspective:

The Ravens' decision to carry four running backs provides depth and flexibility, particularly with the potential for increased kickoff return opportunities. While Ali's role may be limited, his presence offers insurance and special teams value. The selection of Loop as the starting kicker provides stability at a crucial position.
