Jackson Northwest to Join Southeastern Conference in 2027

Jackson Northwest High School is set to join the Southeastern Conference (SEC) for the 2027-28 school year, the conference announced this week. The Mounties will be placed in the White Division, bringing the division's total to eight teams.

The move marks a significant shift for Northwest, which has been part of the Interstate 8 (I-8) conference. According to Northwest athletic director Chris Galloway, the transition to the SEC offers greater scheduling stability. The I-8 has faced challenges with an odd number of teams, requiring one school to schedule a non-conference game each week. The SEC White Division's eight-team structure will streamline scheduling for all member schools.

The SEC voted unanimously, 14-0, to accept Northwest. Commissioner Wayne Welton expressed enthusiasm about the addition, citing a good geographical, enrollment, and program fit. The SEC has been actively seeking to expand its membership, particularly within its larger Red Division. Discussions with the Kensington Lakes Activities Association are ongoing, but the SEC White Division has been seeking an eighth member.

Northwest has already engaged in non-conference games with several SEC rivals. These include football games against Adrian, volleyball matches against Chelsea and Tecumseh, and basketball games against Jackson. The school also participates in co-op programs for lacrosse and hockey that compete against SEC schools.

Galloway believes the move will boost the confidence of Northwest coaches and support the school's competitiveness. He also indicated a willingness to schedule non-conference games against I-8 teams, if it fits the schedule.
