Itch.io Relists Free NSFW Games, Paid Content Remains Delisted
Independent game platform Itch.io is partially reversing its recent decision to remove all Not Safe For Work (NSFW) content from its store. The platform will be relisting free NSFW games today, but paid content will remain delisted for the time being.
Last week, Itch.io deindexed its entire library of NSFW games, a move that followed increased scrutiny of such content by payment providers. This decision drew criticism from game developers, including the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), which expressed serious concern.
In an update to developers, Itch.io owner Leaf Corcoran announced the reinstatement of free NSFW content. Developers wishing to have their free NSFW games listed must mark them as "no payments" and complete a new content warning system. Paid NSFW games will remain delisted while Itch.io seeks a solution to address concerns from payment processors.
One of the key issues is Itch.io's relationship with Stripe, a payment processor that has been used by the platform for over a decade. Stripe has confirmed it cannot support content designed for sexual gratification due to restrictions from its banking partners. Itch.io is exploring the addition of new payment processors to avoid putting the platform at risk. Stripe has indicated it hopes to support adult content in the future.
The IGDA has called for greater transparency and fairness in the moderation of adult games across major platforms. The organization expressed alarm at the recent delistings and payment disruptions, which it says have disproportionately harmed developers producing legal, consensual, and ethically-developed content, including creators from marginalized communities. The IGDA suggests that policy changes are driven by pressure from payment processors like Visa and Mastercard, who may threaten to withhold services from platforms hosting adult content.
BNN's Perspective:
The situation highlights the complex challenges platforms face in balancing freedom of expression with the requirements of payment processors. While Itch.io's decision to reinstate free content is a positive step, the continued delisting of paid content raises concerns about the long-term viability of supporting adult-themed games. Finding a sustainable solution that respects both developer rights and the constraints of financial institutions is crucial for the future of independent game development.
