Itauma's Path to Usyk: A Long Shot, But Not Impossible

Boxing promoter Frank Warren is stoking the flames of excitement around rising heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma, suggesting a potential clash with unified champion Oleksandr Usyk could be on the horizon. However, the path is fraught with obstacles.

Itauma, a 21-year-old, is scheduled to headline Warren's "Magnificent 7" card this Saturday in Manchester, facing Jermaine Franklin. Franklin, known for his durability, has never been stopped in his 26 professional fights. Warren sees Itauma as a "generational talent" and believes a dominant performance against Franklin could catapult him into the elite ranks. Warren has stated that if Itauma can replicate his first-round knockout of Dillian Whyte, he would be ready for the best.

Warren envisions a lucrative fight against Usyk, predicting massive financial success. He also notes the WBC's stance, which could force Usyk to vacate the title if he doesn't defend it.

However, the reality is more complex. Usyk has a packed schedule, with plans including fights against Rico Van Hooven, the winner of Fabio Wardley vs. Daniel Dubois, and a potential trilogy with Tyson Fury. Agit Kabayel has also been mentioned as a possible opponent. Given Usyk's established status, a fight against Itauma, who is still relatively unknown, seems unlikely.

Furthermore, there's a risk for Itauma in taking the fight too early. Usyk is nearing the end of his career, and Itauma might benefit from allowing Usyk to retire and then taking over the division.

BNN's Perspective: While the prospect of Itauma facing Usyk is enticing, it appears to be a long shot at this stage. The more prudent approach for Itauma might be to continue building his experience and reputation, allowing him to capitalize on the inevitable changes in the heavyweight landscape.
