American Journalist Freed by Iran-Backed Militia in Iraq

An American journalist, Shelly Kittleson, has been released by Kataib Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militia operating in Iraq. The release, confirmed by both Iraqi officials and the militia itself, occurred as part of a prisoner exchange with the Iraqi government.

Kataib Hezbollah, a U.S.-designated terror organization, abducted Kittleson in late March. The militia stated Kittleson's release was contingent on her immediate departure from Iraq. A representative of the group indicated this action would not be repeated, citing a "state of war" against the "American-Zionist enemy."

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed the State Department's appreciation for those involved in securing Kittleson's release, emphasizing the government's commitment to the safety of American citizens abroad. The National Press Club also welcomed the news, highlighting the importance of journalists' ability to report safely and freely.

This marks the second instance in recent years where Kataib Hezbollah has kidnapped a foreign national. In September, the group released Elizabeth Tsurkov, an Israeli-Russian citizen, after over two years of captivity. Kittleson, a freelance reporter with over a decade of experience in the Middle East, was held at a location believed to be a stronghold of the militia.

The U.S. government has recently urged American citizens in several Middle Eastern countries, including Iraq, to depart as soon as possible, amid escalating regional tensions. According to Sebastian Gorka, 106 Americans held in foreign countries have been released since January 2025.

BNN's Perspective:

The release of Shelly Kittleson is undoubtedly a positive development. However, the circumstances surrounding her abduction and the militia's motivations raise serious concerns. While the U.S. government's efforts to secure her release are commendable, the incident underscores the volatile security situation in Iraq and the ongoing threat posed by Iran-backed groups. This event highlights the complex challenges facing journalists operating in conflict zones and the need for continued vigilance in protecting their safety.
