India-Pakistan Ceasefire Shattered by Overnight Kashmir Border Clash
A fragile ceasefire between India and Pakistan, aimed at de-escalating tensions in the disputed Kashmir region, was broken by overnight border crossfire. The agreement, announced just a day prior, sought to halt military action on land, air, and sea. However, both sides reported heavy exchanges of fire along the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border dividing the territory.
The fighting, which subsided by Sunday morning, has left residents on both sides of the LoC traumatized. Witnesses described intense shelling and chaotic scenes, forcing many to flee their homes. The ceasefire was brokered after talks to defuse a serious military standoff, fueled by a recent gun massacre of tourists that India blames on Pakistan, a charge Pakistan denies.
The agreement was initially announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform, with Indian and Pakistani officials confirming the news shortly after. Pakistan has since thanked the U.S. and Trump for facilitating the ceasefire, while India has remained silent on the U.S.'s role.
The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the deal as a positive step, hoping it would lead to lasting peace and address broader issues between the two nations. Despite the ceasefire, both countries have accused each other of violating the agreement. Indian officials reported spotting drones over Indian-controlled Kashmir and the western state of Gujarat. The two countries' top military officials are scheduled to speak again on Monday. The ongoing conflict underscores the deep-seated tensions and competing claims over the Kashmir region, which has been the source of two wars between India and Pakistan.
