India Surpasses China in U.S. Smartphone Exports

New data reveals a significant shift in the global smartphone market, with India now leading as the top exporter of smartphones to the United States. According to research firm Canalys, India's share of U.S. smartphone imports surged to 44 percent in the second quarter of 2025. This represents a substantial increase, with the total volume of smartphones manufactured in India experiencing a remarkable 240 percent growth compared to the previous year.

This surge in Indian exports comes at the expense of China, which previously dominated the U.S. market. China's share of U.S. smartphone imports plummeted from 61 percent last year to just 25 percent by June. Vietnam has also increased its presence, now accounting for 30 percent of U.S. smartphone imports.

The shift is attributed to several factors, including ongoing trade tensions and "accelerated supply chain reorientation" following uncertain negotiations between the U.S. and China. Tech giants like Apple have been actively relocating their manufacturing operations to India, while still maintaining some reliance on their established bases in China. Other companies, such as Motorola and Samsung, have also increased their reliance on Indian suppliers.

The U.S. has imposed high tariffs on Chinese goods, creating uncertainty in the global market. Trade talks between the two countries have resumed recently. A tariff simulator predicts a potential $485 billion decline in China-made exports to the U.S. between now and 2027.

BNN's Perspective:

The rise of India as a major smartphone exporter reflects a dynamic global trade landscape. While the shift away from China is likely driven by a complex interplay of economic and political factors, the trend highlights the importance of diversifying supply chains and adapting to evolving trade policies. The U.S. government's push for domestic manufacturing, while potentially beneficial for the U.S. economy, also underscores the need for companies to navigate a changing global environment.
