Kashmir Ceasefire Shattered: India and Pakistan Exchange Fire After Truce
A fragile ceasefire between India and Pakistan, brokered just a day earlier, has been shattered by overnight clashes in the disputed region of Kashmir. The agreement, aimed at de-escalating the most serious military confrontation in decades, was quickly undermined by accusations of violations from both sides.
The escalation in violence began last week following a gun massacre of tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir, which India blamed on Pakistan, a claim Pakistan denies. The initial ceasefire, announced on Saturday, included an immediate halt to all military action on land, air, and sea. However, within hours, both countries reported violations.
Indian officials reported spotting drones over Indian-controlled Kashmir and the western state of Gujarat. Residents in the Poonch area of Indian-controlled Kashmir described intense shelling, with college student Sosan Zehra stating the situation was "completely chaotic." Across the Line of Control, in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir's Neelum Valley, residents reported exchanges of fire and heavy shelling.
The ceasefire announcement was initially welcomed, with U.S. President Donald Trump posting about the deal on his Truth Social platform. Pakistan has expressed gratitude to the U.S. and Trump for facilitating the agreement, while India has remained silent on the matter.
The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the deal as a positive step, hoping it would lead to lasting peace. Top military officials from India and Pakistan are scheduled to speak on Monday. The two nuclear-armed neighbors have a long history of conflict in Kashmir, a region claimed in its entirety by both. They have fought two wars over the territory, and tensions remain high.
