Small Jet Crash in San Diego Military Neighborhood Leaves Trail of Destruction

A small jet plane crashed near a military housing neighborhood in San Diego early Thursday morning, leaving a scene described as "horrific" by officials. The incident, which occurred around 3:45 a.m. local time on Salmon Street near the Tierrasanta neighborhood in the Murphy Canyon area, involved a Cessna 550, a type often used as a corporate jet.

The plane, which had taken off from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey Wednesday night, made a stop in Wichita, Kansas, before heading to California. Upon crashing, the aircraft struck homes and ignited approximately 15 structures and several cars, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials. The number of fatalities on board the plane remains unknown as of Thursday afternoon.

One local resident was hospitalized, and two others were treated for minor injuries. Thankfully, there were no reported fatalities on the ground. However, the crash has created a HAZMAT situation due to aviation fuel flowing down the streets, leading to the evacuation of multiple neighborhoods.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria expressed condolences to the families of those aboard the plane and gratitude to the numerous agencies involved in the swift response. The San Diego Humane Society rescued or decontaminated at least a dozen pets in the aftermath of the crash. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the crash, with the NTSB leading the investigation.
