Caterham Eyes Formula One Return in 2027

Caterham, the iconic motorsport brand, is planning a return to Formula One in 2027, confirmed by SKM Capital. The company intends to enter the sport as SKM Racing with Caterham, marking a comeback after its departure in 2014.

Saad Kassis-Mohamed, a board director at SKM Capital, is leading the initiative. He has outlined two potential paths for the team's entry. The first involves acquiring an existing team. The second involves applying to the FIA and Formula One Management (FOM) to become the 12th team on the grid, similar to the approach taken by the Cadillac F1 team.

Kassis-Mohamed cited the current financial stability of Formula One as a key factor in the decision. He highlighted the sport's "clearer financial guardrails and stable technical frameworks," which make it an attractive investment opportunity. The budget cap, in particular, levels the playing field, preventing larger teams from maintaining a significant financial advantage.

Caterham's brand recognition and lack of current presence on the grid are seen as advantageous. The use of the Caterham brand license allows for a quicker marketing ramp-up without reviving the defunct corporate entity or its liabilities.

SKM Capital is considering two options for entry: acquiring an existing team or applying as a customer team. The team plans to establish a race operations unit in Munich and a technical headquarters in Silverstone if approved.

Kassis-Mohamed is optimistic about setting up the necessary infrastructure and leadership group before the end of this year, contingent on receiving approval to race in F1.
