Dyson's New PencilVac: A Slim and Nimble Cleaning Machine

Dyson is entering the compact vacuum market with its new PencilVac, a slender, lightweight cordless vacuum designed for maneuverability and ease of use. Currently available in Japan and slated for release in Korea next, the PencilVac boasts several innovative features packed into its slim profile. While a US release is planned for next year, pricing details are yet to be announced.

The PencilVac distinguishes itself with its unique design. It's built to access tight spaces and under low furniture, thanks to its slim handle (38mm) and cleaner head (95mm). This design eliminates the need for Dyson's traditional cyclone technology, instead employing a two-stage linear dust-separation system. This system uses a high-velocity airflow to separate dirt and debris, compressing the dust within the bin to maximize capacity. The bin itself has a 0.08L volume but can hold five times more due to the compression technology.

Powering the PencilVac is a new Hyperdymium 104k motor, the smallest and fastest Dyson has produced. This motor, derived from the Supersonic r hair dryer and Airwrap, spins at up to 140,000 RPM, providing 55 air watts of suction. The vacuum also features four conical brush bars called Fluffycones, which clean in all directions. Green lasers illuminate dust particles, enhancing visibility. The PencilVac also connects to the MyDyson app, offering access to settings and maintenance alerts.

The reviewer found the PencilVac easy to use and maneuver, particularly appreciating the absence of a trigger and the integrated LCD screen. The vacuum effectively cleaned up messes of Cheerios, cookie crumbs, and hair. The reviewer also noted the convenience of the floor dock and the effectiveness of the hair-friendly brush bars. The main drawback is the battery life, which is up to 30 minutes in Eco mode.

BNN's Perspective: The PencilVac seems like a smart move by Dyson, catering to the growing demand for compact and efficient cleaning solutions. While the limited battery life might be a concern for some, the overall design and features suggest it could be a strong contender in the small-space vacuum market.
