5G Road Trip Test Reveals Surprising Coverage Winner

A recent road trip across the Midwest tested the 5G coverage of three major mobile carriers: Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T. The goal was to assess the reliability and reach of their 5G networks outside of major metropolitan areas. The test involved driving over 1,000 miles, collecting over 120,000 data points using three Google Pixel phones, each equipped with an eSIM from a different carrier. The testing methodology included continuous monitoring of signal strength and connectivity using the nPerf app, which measured location, carrier, and signal strength. Speed tests were also conducted at regular intervals using an iPhone, ensuring consistent positioning for each carrier.

The results revealed that all three carriers generally provided good to decent signal reliability. T-Mobile emerged as the leader in overall 5G coverage, achieving a 96.2% coverage rate. All three carriers demonstrated decent or better signal strength for over 90% of the trip. Verizon showcased impressive speeds in certain locations, with speeds just under 4GBps down in Louisville, Kentucky. The study also highlighted the difference between Non-Standalone (NSA) and Standalone (SA) 5G deployments. T-Mobile was the only carrier to manage any connectivity with an NSA configuration. NSA networks utilize existing 4G infrastructure, while SA networks use 5G infrastructure from the ground up.

The findings suggest that while all three carriers are making progress in expanding their 5G networks, T-Mobile currently offers the most extensive coverage. The tests were conducted primarily on interstate highways, which are often high-traffic areas. The results may vary in less populated areas.

BNN's Perspective: The study provides valuable insights into the current state of 5G coverage across the Midwest. While T-Mobile's performance is noteworthy, the fact that all three carriers demonstrated decent signal strength is encouraging for consumers. As 5G technology continues to develop, it will be interesting to see how these networks evolve and improve coverage in less populated areas.
