Texas Man Flees to Italy After Being Accused of Killing Pregnant Wife

A Texas man, Lee Mongerson Gilley, accused of murdering his pregnant wife, Christa Bauer Gilley, has fled the country and is now in custody in Italy. Gilley, 39, was scheduled to appear in court for his trial but instead removed his ankle monitor and traveled to Italy, where he has requested asylum.

Gilley's attorney, Dick DeGuerin, stated that his client flew from Texas to Canada and then to Italy. Gilley claims he is being wrongfully prosecuted and fears the death penalty. DeGuerin expressed concern that the prosecution will use Gilley's flight as evidence of guilt.

Christa Bauer Gilley was nine weeks pregnant when she died on October 7, 2024. Charging documents indicate that Gilley allegedly killed her by applying pressure to her neck and upper back. Initially, Gilley told police his wife had overdosed, and he attempted CPR. However, a medical examiner determined the cause of death was homicide due to strangulation. The couple had reportedly been arguing before her death.

Gilley had been out on a $1 million bond since October 21, 2024, and was required to wear an ankle monitor. Authorities were alerted on Friday when the device indicated tampering. Prosecutors revealed that Gilley had an affair in 2023 and discussed plans with the other woman to remove his GPS monitor, flee to Mexico, and get married.

Texas authorities are working with Italian officials to secure Gilley's return to the United States. DeGuerin noted that Texas must confirm with Italian authorities that Gilley is not subject to the death penalty, which prosecutors have not sought.

BNN's Perspective: This case highlights the complexities of the legal system and the lengths individuals will go to avoid prosecution. While the accused has the right to legal representation and a fair trial, the act of fleeing the country raises serious questions about his guilt and commitment to facing the charges. The situation underscores the importance of international cooperation in bringing fugitives to justice.
