Honolulu Police Officers Face Assaults in Multiple Incidents
Honolulu Police Department (HPD) officers were subjected to separate assaults on Saturday evening, marking a concerning trend of violence against law enforcement. The incidents, which occurred in Aiea and Honolulu, involved two female suspects who allegedly attacked officers during investigations. These cases represent at least the third instance of officer assault within just over a week.
In Aiea, officers responded to a call at a residence on Kihewa Place, where a 39-year-old woman was asked to leave the home. Upon being instructed to gather her belongings, the woman became aggressive, spitting at and assaulting officers. As they attempted to arrest her, she continued to resist, head-butting and punching the officers. She then charged at another officer before being subdued and arrested. Two officers sustained injuries and were treated at a hospital before being released. The woman was arrested on two counts of assaulting a law enforcement officer in the second degree, with bail set at $11,000.
In a separate incident in Honolulu, a 29-year-old woman was arrested at 8:37 p.m. on suspicion of attacking a 24-year-old officer. The officer was arresting her on suspicion of driving under the influence following a car crash on Ala Moana Boulevard. During the arrest, the suspect became combative and bit an officer while being led to a police vehicle. She was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a law enforcement officer in the first degree, impaired driving, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.
Both women remain in police custody. The HPD has stated that charges will be pursued with the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney in both cases.
These incidents follow the July 12 arrest of Travis Soares-White, 33, who was charged on July 14 with assaulting a law enforcement officer in the first degree. Soares-White was arrested following a traffic stop and is currently free on $15,000 bail.
BNN's Perspective:
The recent surge in assaults against Honolulu police officers is deeply troubling. While the circumstances of each case vary, the repeated targeting of law enforcement highlights a growing disregard for authority and public safety. It is crucial that the legal system holds those responsible accountable and that the community supports its officers.
