Samsung Enters Mixed Reality Arena with Galaxy XR Headset
Samsung has officially entered the mixed reality market with the launch of its Galaxy XR headset, now available for pre-order. The device, developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm, marks the first product in a new Android XR ecosystem, with plans to expand to include AI glasses and other future innovations.
Priced at $1,800, the Galaxy XR offers a more accessible entry point compared to Apple's Vision Pro. The headset boasts a 4K micro-OLED screen and a 100-degree horizontal field of view. Consumers can purchase the device directly from Samsung's website and in Samsung Experience Stores. An optional Galaxy XR Controller is available for $250, as is the official travel case, also priced at $250.
To incentivize early adoption, Samsung is offering exclusive bonuses for pre-orders placed before the end of 2025. The "Explorer Pack" includes a year of access to Google AI Pro, YouTube Premium, and Google Play Pass. Additionally, the "XR Pack" provides three months of YouTube TV, a year of NBA League Pass, NFL Pro Era, Adobe's Project Pulsar, Asteroid, and Calm.
Samsung is also providing financing options to make the Galaxy XR more accessible. Customers can choose a 24-month financing plan through the website, with monthly payments of $75.01. Samsung Experience Stores offer both the 24-month plan and a 12-month plan, with monthly payments of $149.
BNN's Perspective: The Galaxy XR's launch signals a significant step in the evolution of mixed reality technology. While the price point is competitive, the cost of accessories, particularly the travel case, may give some potential buyers pause. The bundled incentives are a smart move to attract early adopters and build momentum for the new Android XR ecosystem. The success of this device will depend on the quality of the user experience and the continued development of compelling content.
