CU Buffs Soccer Dominates Iowa State with Historic Hat Trick
Boulder, CO - The Colorado University (CU) women's soccer team secured a decisive 3-1 victory over Iowa State in a recent Big 12 Conference matchup. The game was highlighted by a remarkable performance from junior forward Hope Leyba, who recorded her second hat trick of the season, making program history.
Leyba's scoring prowess was on full display, ending a brief goal drought with a dominant performance. She scored in the 17th minute with a header off a cross from Ava Priest, followed by a goal in the 37th minute, assisted by freshman Ruby Hayward. Leyba completed her hat trick in the 53rd minute, with assists from Caley Swierenga and Greer Maguire. This marks the ninth hat trick in CU program history, and Leyba joins Nikki Marshall as the only CU players to achieve multiple hat tricks. She is the first to record two in the same season.
Leyba's performance not only secured the win but also propelled her into a five-way tie for the third-most goals in a season, with 12 goals this season. Her career total now stands at 22 goals, tying her for seventh all-time.
Iowa State managed to score a goal in the 82nd minute, preventing a shutout. CU head coach Danny Sanchez praised the team's offensive performance while acknowledging Iowa State's efforts. CU goalie Jordan Nytes also made history, securing her 32nd win, placing her fourth in CU history.
The Buffs, now with a record of 7-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in Big 12 play, will continue their home stand against Houston on Sunday.
BNN's Perspective:
Leyba's performance is a testament to her skill and determination. While the team's success is encouraging, it's important to acknowledge the competitive nature of the Big 12. The team's ability to maintain this level of play will be crucial as the season progresses.
