Honda Issues Major Recall Over Rear Suspension Concerns

American Honda Motor Co. is initiating a significant recall affecting over 880,000 vehicles due to a potential issue with rear suspension components. The defect could lead to a failure of these parts, potentially causing drivers to lose control of their vehicles and increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

The recall encompasses a range of popular models, including certain 2016-2022 Honda Pilot, 2017-2023 Ridgeline, and 2019-2023 Passport vehicles. Additionally, affected Acura models include the 2014-2020 Acura MDX. The total number of vehicles included in this recall is 880,514.

The core of the problem lies with the rear subframe, which can experience corrosion at its suspension mounting points. This corrosion can compromise the integrity of the subframe, leading to a failure of the rear suspension system. Honda estimates that only a small fraction, approximately 1%, of the affected vehicles are likely to exhibit this defect.

To date, Honda has reported no warranty claims or any incidents of injury or death associated with this specific issue.

As a corrective measure, authorized Honda and Acura dealerships will conduct an inspection of the rear subframe on affected vehicles. If the defect is found, a reinforcement kit will be installed, or the rear subframe components will be repaired or replaced entirely. These services will be provided to vehicle owners at no cost.

Owners of the affected vehicles can expect to receive notification letters by mail on or around July 7. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has assigned campaign number 26V367000 to this recall, with Honda's internal identification numbers being AOU and AOT. A tool to check if a specific vehicle is included in the recall, using its Vehicle Identification Number, will be available on NHTSA.gov starting June 10. For further inquiries, owners can contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138.

BNN's Perspective:

This recall highlights the ongoing importance of vehicle safety and the proactive measures manufacturers take to address potential issues. While the estimated percentage of affected vehicles is low, the potential consequences of a rear suspension failure underscore the necessity of this widespread action. Consumers can take comfort in the manufacturer's commitment to providing free repairs and the availability of information to identify affected vehicles.
