Doctors say that heat waves bring along with them a host of ailments that may even be life-threatening if not taken care of in time. One of the most common, yet dangerous is stomach infections. Norovirus
Norovirus is one of the most common summer-related gastric ailments, which can be transmitted directly from an infected person, by touching contaminated surfaces and then putting your unwashed hands in your mouth, or by swallowing contaminated water or food.
In Norovirus, the digestive system becomes relatively weaker and slower during the hotter months. As a result, the entire digestive tract becomes easily vulnerable to various viruses and bacteria. Some common problems that are prevalent during summers are dehydration, loss of appetite, and food poisoning, said Dr. Subrata Das, Senior Consultant - Internal Medicine and Diabetology, at Sakra World Hospital.
Steps to avoid gastric infections
According to Dr. Das, you must always take care of your hygiene, especially during the summer to take care of your gastric issues.
A few important tips he has listed are:
Always wash hands
Make sure to wash your hands before having food and keep the environment - including the kitchen and bathrooms - clean.
Reduce
non-veg food
Dr. Das says you must reduce the intake of non-vegetarian food items like chicken or egg during extreme heat times as they become breeding grounds for salmonella bacteria. It typically lives in animal and human intestines and is shed through stool.
You can become infected most frequently through contaminated water or food.
Hydrate
It is very important to drink enough water throughout the day to avoid dehydration. If traveling, carry Oral Rehydration Solution or glucose, and make sure to eat curd or yogurt before leaving the house.
Eat proper diet
Dr. Das recommends eating fruits with high water quantity to feel light and fresh during extreme summer. Fruits are also loaded with fibre and help treat infections. Avoid junk foods and fatty foods, or the ones loaded with preservatives to save yourself from food poisoning.
Exercise light
Engage in light activities like yoga, walking, and running, which are recommended by experts for all ages and genders. These activities can aid digestion and reduce stress, which further ease abdominal pain.
