Heat, Humidity, and Storms Expected This Week
As the official start of summer approaches, residents can expect a significant rise in temperature and humidity, creating conditions ripe for afternoon and evening storms. A Heat Advisory is in effect for many areas, with high heat and humidity posing a risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly during the afternoon.
The primary weather concern is the potential for strong to severe storms, driven by a cold front moving in. The greatest risk of severe weather is expected inland, though isolated severe storms are possible in some areas. Damaging straight-line winds exceeding 60 mph are the primary threat associated with these storms.
Thursday will begin with fog, which will dissipate by mid-morning, giving way to sunshine. Storms are likely to develop around or after 4 p.m., potentially losing strength as they move eastward. Overnight temperatures will be warm, with lows in the upper 60s. High temperatures will approach 90 degrees inland, while coastal areas will experience slightly cooler conditions. The combination of heat and humidity will make it feel like temperatures are in the upper 90s.
Looking ahead, the official start of summer on Friday will bring highs in the low 80s. The weekend will see temperatures in the mid to upper 80s, with a dry Saturday anticipated. Some areas may experience storms on Sunday morning, particularly closer to the coast. Highs on Sunday will approach 90 degrees. Next week, a heat dome is expected to build across the East Coast, bringing highs in the 90s with high humidity. Monday and Tuesday are currently forecast to have a major heat risk, with Tuesday potentially reaching near 100 degrees.
BNN's Perspective: While the upcoming heat and potential storms are concerning, it's important to remember that these are typical summer weather patterns. Residents should take necessary precautions to stay safe, such as staying hydrated, seeking shade during peak heat hours, and monitoring weather updates. Being prepared and informed is key to enjoying the summer season safely.
