New Psychiatric Hospital Opens in Byron Township to Address Mental Health Needs

Grand Rapids, MI – West Michigan residents will soon have increased access to vital mental health services with the upcoming opening of Southridge Behavioral Hospital in Byron Township. The new, state-of-the-art facility, a $46 million joint venture between Trinity Health Michigan and Universal Health Services (UHS), will offer 96 beds dedicated to treating individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and other mental health challenges.

The hospital, located near the Trinity Health Medical Center, aims to alleviate the shortage of in-patient psychiatric beds in the region, ensuring that patients can receive the care they need closer to home. Southridge will provide a range of services, including counseling, psychiatric care, music therapy, art therapy, and outdoor activities. The facility boasts a gym, dining room, group activity rooms, and an outdoor courtyard, all designed to create a welcoming and therapeutic environment.

Safety is a top priority at Southridge. The hospital incorporates features designed to prevent self-harm, including shatter-proof mirrors and ligature-proof fixtures. The facility will employ 170 full- and part-time staff, including nurses, physicians, therapists, and support personnel. Southridge will offer both in-patient and outpatient services, building upon the existing 24-hour Behavioral Health Crisis Center offered by Trinity Health.

The partnership between Trinity Health and UHS, a company with a significant presence in Michigan, underscores the commitment to addressing the growing demand for behavioral health care. UHS already operates six other facilities in the state, including Forest View Hospital in Grand Rapids Township and Havenwyck Hospital in Auburn Hills. Southridge is expected to open in the coming weeks.
