HBO Max Announces Price Hikes Across All Plans

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced a price increase for its streaming service, HBO Max, impacting all subscription tiers. This marks the latest in a series of price adjustments within the streaming industry.

The Basic with Ads plan will now cost $10.99 per month, a $1 increase. The yearly plan is priced at $109.99, up $10. The Standard Plan will now cost $18.49 per month, a $1.50 increase. The yearly plan is priced at $184.99, up $15. The Premium plan will now cost $22.99 per month, a $2 increase. The yearly plan is priced at $229.99, marking a $20 increase.

The new pricing structure takes effect immediately for new subscribers. Existing subscribers will see the changes reflected in their billing cycles on or after November 20. This is the second price increase for HBO Max in 2024.

The decision follows comments made by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, who stated that HBO Max was underpriced, citing the quality of its content. Zaslav also indicated that the company plans to implement restrictions on password sharing in the future, similar to measures already adopted by other streaming services.

These price hikes come on the heels of similar moves by competitors. Disney recently increased the prices of its Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions, and Apple raised the price of its streaming service in August.

BNN's Perspective: The trend of rising streaming prices is concerning for consumers, but it's understandable given the industry's investment in high-quality content. While these increases may lead some to reconsider their subscriptions, the continued demand for premium entertainment suggests that the market can absorb these adjustments, at least for now. The crackdown on password sharing is another factor that could impact subscriber numbers, but it's a move that many streaming services are making to increase revenue.
