Harvard Astronomer Raises Concerns About Interstellar Object
A Harvard astronomer is sparking renewed debate about the nature of an interstellar object, 31/ATLAS, currently en route to our solar system. Avi Loeb, chair of Harvard's astronomy department, suggests the object, detected by a remote telescope in Chile, may be an engineered object rather than a natural one.
Loeb, who has previously voiced similar hypotheses, told CNN that the object's brightness implies a significant diameter, estimated at 20 kilometers. He argues that the sheer size of 31/ATLAS, coupled with the scarcity of such large rocky material in interstellar space, raises questions about its origin. He also noted that the object will be closest to Earth when our planet is on the opposite side of the sun, making direct observation difficult.
Adding to the intrigue, Loeb points out that the glow surrounding 31/ATLAS, as observed by the Hubble Space Telescope, appears in front of the object, a phenomenon not typically seen with comets, which usually exhibit a trailing tail. He emphasizes the importance of thorough examination of all interstellar objects entering our solar system, given the potential for both positive and negative implications.
This isn't the first time Loeb has proposed unconventional explanations for interstellar objects. In 2017, he speculated that Oumuamua, the first interstellar object detected, might have been an alien-engineered "light sail." While some of his theories have been met with skepticism from the scientific community, his persistent questioning highlights the ongoing mystery surrounding these celestial bodies.
31/ATLAS is one of only three known interstellar objects discovered to date. Its massive size and unusual characteristics have prompted Loeb to suggest that it could be a product of advanced technology.
