Hardcore Wrestling Icon Sabu Passes Away at 60
The wrestling world is in mourning following the death of legendary hardcore wrestler Terry Brunk, known to fans as Sabu. The news, confirmed by AEW and WWE on Sunday, marks the end of an era for fans of extreme wrestling. Sabu was 60 years old.
Sabu, renowned for his death-defying stunts and ultra-violent matches, leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable moments. He was a pioneer of the hardcore style, thrilling audiences with his willingness to put his body on the line. His career was defined by his time in ECW during the 1990s, where he became a two-time ECW Champion, ECW Tag Team Champion, and ECW World Television Champion. He was known for his use of barbed wire, chairs, tables, and other weapons in his matches.
Just weeks before his passing, Sabu competed in his retirement match at Joey Janela's Spring Break 9 during WrestleMania weekend in Las Vegas. GCW owner Brett Lauderdale, who promoted the match, stated it was an honor to give Sabu the sendoff he deserved, calling him a legend whose legacy will live on.
Sabu's career spanned multiple promotions, including New Japan Pro Wrestling, WCW, TNA, and a brief stint in WWE in the 2000s. He even performed at WrestleMania 23 in 2007. He also made an appearance in AEW in 2023.
The cause of death has not been released at this time. The wrestling community, including AEW, has expressed their condolences to Sabu's family, friends, and fans.
