Joe Thornton Returns to Sharks in New Role

San Jose Sharks legend Joe Thornton is officially back with the team, taking on a player development coach and hockey operations advisor role. The announcement came Tuesday, solidifying Thornton's involvement with the organization following his unofficial work in player development since retiring from the NHL after the 2021-22 season.

Thornton, whose number 19 was retired by the Sharks last year, joins a player development staff that includes director Todd Marchant, Mike Ricci, Patrick Marleau, Tommy Wingels, and Luca Sbisa.

Thornton's return comes after his recent election to the Hockey Hall of Fame. He concluded his 24-year NHL career with an impressive 1,539 points (430 goals, 1,109 assists) in 1,714 games. His career spanned the Boston Bruins, Sharks, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Florida Panthers. He currently ranks 14th in all-time points, seventh in assists, and sixth in games played. Thornton is one of only 14 skaters to surpass 1,000 assists and one of seven to achieve the milestones of 1,500 games played, 1,000 assists, and 400 goals.

The Sharks acquired Thornton in a trade with the Boston Bruins in November 2005. He played with the team until the end of the 2019-2020 season.

In related news, the Sharks also announced changes within their hockey operations department. Owen Hixon has been appointed as the new assistant equipment manager, replacing Jon Laughner. Several other staff members have also received new roles and titles, including Charlie Townsend, AJ Bernstein, Dylan Finan, Jon Hull, Tim LeRoy, and Thomas Vanek.

BNN's Perspective:

The return of Joe Thornton to the Sharks in a formal capacity is a positive development. His experience and knowledge of the game will be invaluable in mentoring young players and contributing to the team's overall success. While the Sharks are in a rebuilding phase, Thornton's presence can help foster a winning culture and provide a strong foundation for the future.
