Google's latest Pixel drop brings the Material 3 Expressive UI to older devices

Google Rolls Out New Features to Older Pixel Devices

Google is expanding the reach of its latest software innovations, initially unveiled with the Pixel 10 series, to older Pixel devices. Starting today, users of Pixel devices released since 2021, including the Pixel 6 and Pixel Tablet, can access the new Material 3 Expressive user interface. This update allows for greater customization, including "Live Effects" for lock screen wallpapers and enhanced control over contact card displays. The Quick Settings pane has also been redesigned for improved usability.

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 are also receiving a series of updates later this month. These include Adaptive Audio, which adjusts the earbuds' output based on the user's surroundings, and Loud Noise Protection to safeguard hearing. New head gestures will allow users to answer or dismiss calls and text messages.

Android's Bluetooth audio capabilities are also getting a boost with LE Audio Auracast. This technology enables users to pair two sets of Bluetooth headphones to a single device, allowing for shared listening experiences. Users can also create QR codes to initiate private audio broadcasts, potentially for events like silent discos. The Quick Share menu has been redesigned to facilitate easier file transfers.

These new audio features are made possible by Auracast, which allows for public broadcasts of Bluetooth audio. Google began supporting Auracast with the third Android 16 beta, and now devices from Google, Samsung, and Xiaomi are ready to join in.

In addition to these updates, Google is introducing new AI-powered features. Gboard is gaining enhanced writing tools, allowing users to edit their writing for formality, expressiveness, or conciseness, as well as correct spelling and grammar. Finally, Google is launching Androidify, an AI-powered experience that allows users to create custom Android bots.
