Giants Secure Luis Arraez in One-Year Deal

The Giants have reached an agreement with infielder Luis Arraez on a one-year contract, according to reports. The deal, pending a physical, will see Arraez earn $12 million and is expected to see him play second base.

Arraez, who was seeking a multi-year contract, prioritized teams that would utilize him at second base. He reportedly turned down multi-year offers from other teams to secure this role. This agreement aligns with projections that estimated a two-year, $24 million contract. The contract allows Arraez to become a free agent after the 2026 season.

The addition of Arraez brings the Giants' 2026 payroll to $206 million, nearly $30 million more than last year's. Their Competitive Balance Tax (CBT) payroll for 2026 now stands at $232.7 million, leaving approximately $11.3 million for future additions before reaching the first luxury tax threshold. This marks the second eight-figure signing for the team this week, following the acquisition of Harrison Bader.

Arraez is expected to bring a contact-oriented approach to a power-heavy infield. He will complement hitters like Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, and Rafael Devers. Arraez's low strikeout rate and all-fields approach are expected to balance out the team's swing-and-miss tendencies.

Last season, Arraez hit .292, the lowest batting average of his career. His hard-hit rate was the lowest among qualified hitters. Defensively, Arraez has received poor grades, particularly at second base. His addition may also impact the team's interest in potential trade targets for second base.

BNN's Perspective: This signing represents a calculated move by the Giants. While Arraez's defensive limitations are a concern, his ability to get on base and make contact should provide a valuable offensive boost. The one-year deal allows the team flexibility while addressing a clear need at second base.
