Red Sox Take Game 1 of AL Wild Card Series Against Yankees

The Boston Red Sox secured a 3-1 victory over the New York Yankees in the opening game of their American League wild-card series on Tuesday night. The game was marked by a dominant pitching performance from Garrett Crochet, who retired 17 consecutive batters after allowing an early home run.

Crochet, facing off against Max Fried, pitched 7 2/3 innings, throwing a career-high 117 pitches. He struck out 11 batters while allowing only four hits and no walks, improving his record against the Yankees to 4-0 this year. His final pitch was clocked at 100.2 mph.

The Red Sox took the lead in the seventh inning when Masataka Yoshida delivered a two-run single off Yankees reliever Luke Weaver. Weaver struggled, walking a batter and allowing a hit before Yoshida's crucial hit.

Former Yankee Aroldis Chapman closed out the eighth inning, and Alex Bregman added an RBI double in the ninth. Despite the Yankees loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth, Chapman managed to secure the save, striking out Giancarlo Stanton and retiring the final two batters.

The Red Sox's victory extends their postseason dominance over the Yankees, improving their record to 13-12 against their rivals, including nine wins in their last ten meetings. Game 2 of the best-of-three series is scheduled for Wednesday night.

BNN's Perspective:

This game highlighted the importance of strong pitching and timely hitting in the postseason. While Crochet's performance was exceptional, the Yankees' bullpen struggles proved costly. The Red Sox capitalized on their opportunities, showcasing their ability to execute under pressure. The series is far from over, but Boston has certainly set the tone.
