Haiti's Central Region Under Siege as Gangs Launch Deadly Attacks
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Heavily armed gangs have launched a series of brutal attacks in Haiti's central region, resulting in numerous deaths and widespread displacement. The attacks, which began late Friday and continued through the weekend, targeted towns including Bercy and Pont-Sond, forcing residents to flee their homes.
Police have issued urgent calls for reinforcements, reporting that approximately 50% of the Artibonite region is now under gang control. One police union described the situation as the "greatest security failure in modern Haitian history," highlighting the inability of the population to live, work, or move freely.
Local officials have confirmed multiple fatalities, including a mother and child, and a government employee. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire and criticized the lack of police presence. The attacks have been attributed to the Gran Grif gang, known for its brutality and previous involvement in a large-scale massacre in October 2024 that resulted in at least 100 deaths. The gang's leader, Luckson Elan, has been sanctioned by the U.N. Security Council and the U.S. government.
The U.N. has reported a significant increase in killings in the Artibonite and Centre departments this year, with 1,303 victims reported between January and August, compared to 419 during the same period in 2024. A recent U.N. report highlighted the gangs' ability to consolidate control due to limited law enforcement presence and logistical challenges.
A member of Haiti's transitional presidential council condemned the attacks, criticizing the government's inability to address the ongoing crisis.
BNN's Perspective: The escalating violence in Haiti's central region underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive and coordinated response. While international support, including the U.N.-backed mission, is crucial, the Haitian government must prioritize strengthening its own security forces and addressing the root causes of gang violence. A sustainable solution requires a multi-faceted approach that includes law enforcement, economic development, and social programs to address the underlying issues that fuel instability.
