French Open 2025: More Withdrawals Shake Up the Tournament
The 2025 French Open is just around the corner, but the field is already seeing significant changes. Following the draw ceremony, six more players have withdrawn from the prestigious tournament, adding to the four withdrawals previously reported. This means the competition will look different than initially anticipated.
Among the notable withdrawals is Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic, who aggravated an arm injury during practice. Matteo Berrettini, hampered by a right oblique injury sustained at the Italian Open, also pulled out. Kei Nishikori, a former US Open finalist, withdrew due to lower back pain, continuing a string of injury setbacks. Emil Ruusuvuori, citing mental health concerns, also withdrew. Rounding out the list are Roberto Carballes Baena and Raphael Collignon.
These withdrawals have opened the door for other players to enter the main draw. Taylor Townsend will take Bencic's place, while Marin Cilic, a former US Open champion, replaces Berrettini. Thiago Agustin Tirante, a clay-court specialist, steps in for Nishikori, and Federico Agustin Gomez replaces Ruusuvuori. Daniel Elahi Galan and Elmer Moller also gained entry into the main draw.
The withdrawals highlight the physical demands of professional tennis and the importance of player well-being. While the absence of these players is disappointing for fans, it also provides opportunities for others to shine on the world stage.
BNN's Perspective: The French Open is a grueling tournament, and these withdrawals are a reminder of the toll it takes on players. While it's unfortunate for the fans and the players themselves, it's also a chance for new faces to emerge and for the remaining competitors to step up their game. It's a testament to the depth of talent in the sport that replacements are readily available.
