Francis Ngannou and PFL Part Ways After Tumultuous Partnership
The Professional Fighters League (PFL) and former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou have ended their three-year agreement, according to an official statement released today. The separation comes after a relatively short and eventful partnership that began in May 2023.
Ngannou, who held a leadership position in PFL Africa, only competed once in mixed martial arts under the PFL banner. That single bout, in October 2024, saw him defeat Renan Ferreira in the first round, demonstrating his renowned power.
A key element of Ngannou's PFL contract was the freedom to pursue lucrative boxing opportunities. He capitalized on this, making a significant impact in the boxing world. He notably faced Tyson Fury, nearly securing a victory, before suffering a second-round knockout loss to Anthony Joshua in March 2024. Following the Joshua fight, Ngannou has not participated in any further competitive events.
The decision to part ways with Ngannou follows a period of significant personal challenges for the fighter. In 2024, Ngannou experienced the tragic loss of his young son. Further compounding these difficulties, he was involved in a motorcycle accident in April 2025 in his home country of Cameroon, which resulted in the death of a 17-year-old girl.
The PFL expressed respect for Ngannou, both as an athlete and an individual, and wished him well in his future endeavors. The organization emphasized its continued commitment to recruiting top athletes and delivering high-quality competition to its global fanbase.
BNN's Perspective:
The split between Ngannou and the PFL is understandable given the circumstances. While the partnership promised exciting possibilities, the personal tragedies Ngannou has endured have understandably shifted his priorities. The PFL's decision to move forward allows both parties to pursue their respective goals, and we hope Ngannou finds peace and success in his future endeavors.
