Four States Brace for Sub-Freezing Temperatures
A cold snap is forecast to bring sub-freezing temperatures to parts of four states, starting Sunday night and extending into Monday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings urging residents to take precautions against the cold.
The affected states include Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Louisiana. Specific areas within these states are expected to experience temperatures below freezing. The NWS advises that central, eastern, north central, southeast, southwest, and western Arkansas could see temperatures drop below 20 degrees, while parts of northwest and west central Arkansas may experience temperatures below 19 degrees.
In Oklahoma, central, east central, northern, northwest, southeast, southern, southwest, and western regions are likely to see temperatures between 22 and 25 degrees. Parts of northern and central Texas are also included in the warning, with some areas in northwest Louisiana potentially facing temperatures as low as 23 degrees.
The NWS emphasizes the importance of protecting vulnerable populations, including infants and the elderly, from frostbite and hypothermia. Residents are advised to protect plants and crops, and to take steps to prevent outdoor water pipes from freezing.
The NWS recommends preparing a cold-weather survival kit, including flashlights, a first-aid kit, non-perishable food, water, cat litter or sand for traction, shovels, ice scrapers, warm clothing, hand and foot warmers, and blankets. It is also recommended to ensure vehicles have at least half a tank of gas. Residents should also ensure pets and farm animals have access to warm shelter, food, and water.
The NWS has also issued warnings about wind chill values, which are expected to be in the teens on Monday and Tuesday mornings. While the cold blast is expected to be short-lived, with temperatures returning to the upper 70s and low 80s by mid-week, residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and prepare for the possibility of more cold weather.
BNN's Perspective: While the cold snap is expected to be temporary, it's a good reminder of the importance of preparedness. It's crucial for residents to heed the NWS warnings and take the necessary steps to protect themselves, their property, and their animals. This event underscores the need for proactive measures to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events.
