Ford Issues Major Recalls Affecting Hundreds of Thousands of Vehicles
Ford Motor Company is recalling nearly 625,000 vehicles in the United States due to safety concerns related to seatbelts and rearview camera displays, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recalls impact two distinct vehicle groups, each addressing a specific safety issue.
The first recall involves 332,778 Mustang vehicles from model years 2015-2017. The NHTSA has determined that water and road salt can corrode the front seat belt anchor pretensioner cables. This corrosion can lead to cable breakage, potentially preventing the seatbelt from properly restraining occupants during a crash and increasing the risk of injury. Ford dealers will inspect and replace the front seat belt anchor pretensioner assemblies as needed, along with removing sections of carpet and underlayment that contact the cables. Owners will be notified of the safety risk this month, with the final remedy expected to be available in January 2026.
The second recall affects 291,901 F-250, F-350, and F-450 Super Duty trucks from model years 2020-2022. The issue concerns the 360-degree view camera system, which may not display a rearview image correctly in certain lighting conditions. This malfunction can also increase the risk of a crash. Ford dealers will update the image processing module software to resolve the issue. Owners will be notified starting October 20, with the final remedy expected to be available around March 2026.
Ford has stated that the quality of its vehicles and the safety of its customers are top priorities. The company emphasized its commitment to quickly identifying and addressing hardware and software issues. Ford also noted that it has significantly expanded its team of safety and technical experts. These recalls are the latest in a series of actions taken by Ford, including recalls in July for Bronco Sport and Escape vehicles due to fuel leak concerns and for other issues in the weeks prior.
BNN's Perspective: While the frequency of these recalls is concerning, Ford's proactive approach to identifying and addressing safety issues is commendable. The company's commitment to customer safety, as evidenced by its increased investment in safety experts and its willingness to address issues in older models, is a positive sign. However, the repeated recalls raise questions about the company's quality control processes.
