Deadly Blaze Engulfs Bangkok Pub, Claims 27 Lives
A devastating fire ripped through a popular pub in Bangkok early Monday morning, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 27 individuals and leaving dozens more injured. Firefighters battled the intense blaze for approximately thirty minutes before bringing it under control, according to officials.
Eyewitness accounts and footage shared online depicted a scene of chaos as thick black smoke billowed from the establishment, forcing patrons to flee. The fire was reported around midnight.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, speaking at the scene, confirmed the grim death toll and stated that the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. A musician performing at the pub recounted witnessing smoke emanating from a circuit breaker near the stage just before the power failed. This was followed by an explosion and a rapid engulfment of the venue in smoke. Many of the victims were discovered in the pub's rear restrooms.
Governor Chadchart Sittipunt reported that 63 people were transported to hospitals, with 22 in critical condition. Authorities are working to identify the deceased, as many were found without identification or were unconscious.
The aftermath of the fire revealed extensive damage, with charred furniture and a gutted interior. A registration point has been established to assist relatives searching for loved ones.
One performer, Sukanya Wongwongwai, who was working nearby, rushed to the scene upon hearing the news. She confirmed that several of her bandmates were performing at the pub, with one confirmed deceased, three hospitalized, and one still unaccounted for. She relayed accounts from survivors describing a sudden blackout and pervasive smoke, hindering escape and the ability to locate others.
This incident is not the first of its kind in Thailand. In 2022, a similar fire at a music pub in the eastern part of the country claimed 14 lives. A decade prior, a New Year's Eve celebration at a nightclub in the capital ended in tragedy when a fire, reportedly caused by indoor fireworks, killed 66 people and injured over 200.
BNN's Perspective: The loss of life in this Bangkok pub fire is a profound tragedy. While investigations into the cause are ongoing, the recurring nature of such devastating incidents in entertainment venues across Thailand raises serious questions about fire safety regulations and their enforcement. A thorough review and strengthening of these measures are imperative to prevent future loss of life and ensure the safety of the public.
