Faizan Zaki Triumphs at 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee
In a stunning victory, Faizan Zaki, a 13-year-old from Dallas, Texas, has claimed the title of champion at the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee. After a nail-biting competition held in National Harbor, Maryland, Zaki, a 7th-grade student, correctly spelled the French word "claircissement," meaning clarification, explanation, or enlightenment, to secure the coveted Scripps Cup.
This win marks a significant achievement for Zaki, who was last year's runner-up. This was his fourth appearance at the prestigious spelling bee, having previously placed tied for 370th in 2019 and tied for 21st in 2023. He outspelled over 240 competitors from across the United States and several international locations, including runner-up Sarvadnya Kadam.
Beyond his spelling prowess, Zaki is a well-rounded individual with diverse interests. He enjoys video games, socializing with friends, speed-solving Rubik's Cubes, and playing the viola. He also has a passion for languages and linguistics and is currently learning French, which undoubtedly aided him in his winning word.
The 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, drawing spellers from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and several international locations including Ghana, Guam, Kuwait, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
As the champion, Zaki will receive a grand prize of $50,000 in cash, a commemorative medal, the prestigious Scripps Cup, and other prizes. The Scripps National Spelling Bee is run on a not-for-profit basis by Scripps News, a subsidiary of the E.W. Scripps Company.
