ExxonMobil Greenlights Seventh Major Oil Project in Guyana

HOUSTON, TEXAS - ExxonMobil has announced a final investment decision (FID) for its Hammerhead project in Guyana, marking the seventh major undertaking in the Stabroek oil and gas resource play. The project, expected to begin production in 2029, follows regulatory approvals and represents a significant expansion of the consortium's operations.

ExxonMobil, the operator with a 45% working interest, partners with China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) at 25% and Chevron at 30%. Chevron's involvement followed its acquisition of Hess Corp. earlier this year.

The Hammerhead project will involve an estimated $6.8 billion in capital outlays and include 18 production and injection wells. This brings the total committed funds for the seven approved projects to over $60 billion. The project's operations will be facilitated by a floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel owned by MODEC, Inc.

This announcement comes shortly after the consortium increased its overall capacity to 900,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) with the startup of the Yellowtail project, which has a production capacity of 250,000 bpd. The Uaru and Whiptail projects are also under construction, with production expected to begin in 2026 and 2027, respectively.

The development of the Stabroek block has significantly impacted Guyana's economy, contributing to its status as one of the world's fastest-growing economies. Since production began in 2019, over $7.8 billion has been paid into Guyana's Natural Resource Fund.

BNN's Perspective: While the rapid expansion of oil production in Guyana presents clear economic benefits, it's crucial to balance this growth with environmental considerations and ensure that the benefits are distributed equitably among the Guyanese people. Careful management of the Natural Resource Fund and investment in sustainable infrastructure will be key to long-term success.
