Trump Orders Aim to Revitalize Nuclear Power, Sparking Safety Concerns

President Donald Trump signed executive orders on Friday aimed at accelerating the construction of new nuclear power plants, a move that has ignited debate over safety regulations. The orders seek to streamline the licensing process, allowing Department of Energy labs to conduct reactor design testing and green-lighting construction on federal lands. The administration aims to reduce the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approval timeline to just 18 months.

The White House framed the initiative as a "nuclear energy renaissance," emphasizing the restoration of a strong American nuclear industry and a secure domestic fuel supply chain. This push comes as the demand for energy is increasing due to the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence.

However, critics, including the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), have voiced serious concerns. They warn that the orders will undermine the NRC's independence and ability to enforce safety regulations, potentially increasing the risk of accidents. Experts like Edwin Lyman, director of nuclear power safety at UCS, argue that compromising the NRC's integrity could lead to a major radiological release.

These executive orders follow reports of the Trump administration tightening control over the NRC, including requiring the agency to submit proposed safety rules for White House review. Allison Macfarlane, former NRC chair, has called the move "the end of independence of the agency."

The push for nuclear power is also fueled by investments from major tech companies like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta. However, some environmental groups, such as Environment America Research & Policy Center, question the environmental impact, particularly the creation of radioactive waste.

BNN's Perspective: While the desire to boost domestic energy production and reduce reliance on foreign sources is understandable, the potential risks associated with weakening safety regulations are significant. A balanced approach is needed, one that fosters innovation in nuclear energy while maintaining the independence and effectiveness of the NRC to ensure public safety.
