President Joe Biden Diagnosed with Aggressive Prostate Cancer

Former US President Joe Biden, who served from 2021 to 2025, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, according to a statement released by his office. The diagnosis, made on Friday after Biden experienced urinary symptoms, has prompted him and his family to consult with doctors to determine the best course of treatment.

The statement indicated that the cancer is hormone-sensitive, which offers potential for effective management. The diagnosis comes after Biden abruptly ended his bid for reelection last July, citing health concerns following a debate performance that raised concerns among Democrats.

The news has drawn significant attention, given Biden's age and the advanced stage of the cancer. Cancer that has spread, or metastasized, is considered Stage 4, the most advanced stage. While most prostate cancers are detected earlier, approximately 8% of new diagnoses in 2021 involved advanced-stage disease.

The Gleason score, a grading system used to assess prostate cancer aggressiveness, scored Biden's cancer a nine out of ten, indicating a high-risk form. However, medical experts note that advancements in treatment over the last decade offer hope for managing the disease and extending life expectancy. While the cancer is no longer curable once it spreads to the bones, treatments are available to control its progression. President Donald Trump, who defeated Kamala Harris last year, offered his well wishes for Biden's recovery on social media.

BNN's Perspective: This news is undoubtedly concerning, highlighting the challenges of aging and the prevalence of serious health issues. While the diagnosis is serious, the availability of effective treatments offers a degree of optimism. It's a reminder of the importance of early detection and the need for continued investment in cancer research.
