Former Senator Sinema Sued Over Alleged Affair
PHOENIX – Former U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema is facing a lawsuit alleging she was involved in a romantic relationship with a member of her security detail, leading to the breakup of his marriage. The ex-wife of Matthew Ammel, the security detail member, is seeking at least $75,000 in damages.
The lawsuit claims that before Sinema's involvement, the Ammels had a loving marriage. The suit alleges Sinema pursued Matthew Ammel despite knowing he was married. According to the lawsuit, Matthew Ammel was hired as Sinema's head of security after retiring from the Army in 2022. He reportedly accompanied her on trips to various locations.
The lawsuit states that in early 2024, the ex-wife discovered romantic messages exchanged between Sinema and Matthew Ammel via the Signal messaging app. Subsequently, Matthew Ammel stopped wearing his wedding ring. The lawsuit further alleges that Sinema provided Matthew Ammel with a job as a national security fellow in her Senate office while he continued to work for her campaign as a bodyguard. Additionally, the suit claims Sinema paid for psychedelic treatment for Matthew Ammel, who has a history of post-traumatic stress, substance abuse, and traumatic brain injuries related to his military service.
Sinema and her attorney have not responded to requests for comment. The lawsuit was initially filed late last year and was recently moved to federal court. The case is being pursued in North Carolina, one of the few states that allows lawsuits for alienation of affection. Sinema left Congress after the 2024 election, choosing not to seek reelection. She now works for a Washington-based legal and lobbying firm.
BNN's Perspective: This lawsuit presents a complex situation. While the allegations are serious, it's important to remember that they are just that – allegations. The legal process will determine the truth. Regardless of the outcome, the case highlights the potential for personal relationships to intersect with professional roles, particularly in high-profile positions. It also raises questions about the use of public funds, if any, in providing support for a staff member.
